The chancel was painted in the mid-13th century and belongs to the Zacken style. After extensive careful restoration and cleaning in 1965 and 1984, the room has been restored to its original appearance and
the altarpiece was painted around 1400 and depicts St. Nicholas and the legend of the Virgin Mary. The artist of the St. Nicholas painting is probably Master Conrad von Soest himself, or at least it was probably created in his workshop. The statue of the Madonna on the pillar of the gallery and a particularly impressive Pietà in a wall niche also date from the first half of the 15th century, and
the unusual shape of the interior has been explained since the second half of the 19th century by the fact that the chapel was built on the model of a nave. It was assumed that the merchant brotherhood of Schleswig sailors had donated the chapel and that it was therefore dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of travelers and sailors
, but more recent research has shown that it is a memorial chapel for deceased provosts of St. Patrokli Abbey.
